mostly worked

I unpacked the unit a few hours ago. I've only used it for 20 scans. Here is my preliminary report.
- in general I like the scans. (I haven't done negatives yet, but slides and photos look good - except for the issues noted below)
- processing it is very quick (only a few seconds) - if you don`t use Magic Touch .
- the 3x5 photo scan cut off a little bit of the photo`s edges.
- the slide carrier has click stops, but they don't line the slides up with the viewer (so you spend too much time fidgeting with the carrier to line up the slide)
- Magic Touch processing (dust removal) takes 45 seconds per scan (which works very well, at times)
- Magic Touch only works for slides and negatives. (why not for pictures?)
- should have an on/off switch
- should have a carrying handle
- impossible to keep the glass clean (difficult to get dust-free picture scans. Remember no Magic Touch for pictures.)
- I'm curious why they call this a 9-meg scanner. I set it on Super Fine and 12 meg but can't get more than 2 meg files
- files get a timestamp of 1/1/2009 which is misleading (there is no clock)
- manual needs to be beefed up or include a disc version of a larger more useful document. (e.g., no instructions on what the "setup" options are.)
- manual says put slide carrier in with arrows up. (I don't see any arrows on the slide carrier)
- the menu disappeared when I pressed the wrong keys. (had to unplug to reset the menu)
- needs (at a minimum) on-line tech support.
- not sure if I'm going to keep this unit. (I've got 90 days to figure it out.)"

good and bad

the good:
It's fast, about 10 seconds or so per scan.
if you have a standard image that doesn't have too much contrast, this scanner does an oustanding job for both negs and slides.
the bad:
The user interface is confusing, not intuitive, and takes a bit to get set up so you're actually doing what you think you're doing.
If you have an image (slide) of, let's say, a face, lit by a candle, with a fairly dark background, this scanner tries to be smarter than you are and tries to correct the image. I have not been able to get it to understand that I knew what I was doing when I shot the original image, that I wouldn't be scanning the image if I didn't like it, and that I want it to let me figure out what I want to do. As it stands, I have a number of high contrast (that candle lit image with a dark background) images that I will have to put on my flatbed scanner to finish, because while it's slow, it's also dead on accurate.
if you want to scan directly to your computer via the usb cable, you can't do that.
you can scan to the card you put into the scanner.
you can read on the computer from the scanner.
but you can't do both at the same time (scan from the scanner directly to the computer)
in fact, you can't even scan if you've got the usb cable plugged in.
so...
does it work?
yes.
does it work well?
under narrow conditions... yes.
is it a quality machine?
the front element/screen was not glued in particularly well and came out while I was scanning - I used some of the tape that came with the scanner to hold it in place, so it works, but...
would I buy it again?
If there were some kind of firmware upgrade for this scanner that would allow a manual override (currently it appears to be +2 or -2 - and I need more than that to compensate for the scanner wanting to 'autoexpose' the image I'm scanning) I would be interested in an upgrade - the scanner part is fine, I just need to be able to control it so it does what *I* want it to do, not what *it* wants it to do...

Use scanner for personal use

I use this product to scan family slides and photographs.
Pros:
1. Once you get used to it this copier is easy and fast to use. Working a couple of hours a day, it took me about a week to scan 2000 color slides, BW Negatives, and photographs.
2. Considering the price I think you get your money worth.
3. Resolution is acceptable.
4. Being able to adjust the brightness of the scan allowed me to compensate for extremely under- or over-exposed pictures.
Cons:
1. Documentation is minimal; it took some experimenting to figure out how everything works.
2. It would have been nice if the preview display (it has a narrow viewing angle) had been slanted so that you can see it when working at desk level. I ended up placing some ring binders underneath the device to angle it, so that I could see the display properly.
3. There was some minor dust on the inside of the copy glass - there is no way to open the unit to remove it (unless you want to void warrantee).
4. Magic Touch noise removal didn't work to my expectations.
I suggest you use this product together with a photo editing software to apply further color-adjustments, noise removal, and cropping.
All in all I am happy with the purchase and would recommend it to a friend.
