1Does not live up to the reviews
By B. Radford
After much research, this looked like the best deal. However, it turned out that the only good thing about this scanner is the small footprint! Could not override the auto setting on the scanner so the color slides of landscapes had blue hills and aqua skies that were not there in the originals. There is good ArcSoft software to adjust them after the scanning but no amount of adjusting would reflect the original colors. And, the light areas were too light and the dark areas were too dark. Also, the rack that holds the slides is hinged plastic and looks so flimzy that we wondered how long that would last. So we took the same slides to a friend who has a Hewlett-Packard G4050 table-top scanner. The quality of the scans is so close to the original that it does justice to my father's slides. And, the software is so good for dealing with color adjustments, cropping, sharpening before AND after scanning. Now I have to figure out how to set up a place for the 12" x 19" scanner!

2Mediocre at best
By B. Kralovec
For Christmas gift suggestions I hinted I wanted a way to digitize our old photo negatives. My wife bought me this Pandigital scanner.

First, the good. The product quality seems reasonable, and my slightly curved negatives fit nicely in the tray. Plus it doesn't take up a lot of room on my (already very full) desk. The software installed easily on Windows XP Pro and when I plugged in the USB cable the scanner was immediately recognized by the PC. Since it is powered by the USB connection, it does not need a separate power source which I feel is a big plus.

The problem with the unit is you have to manually slide the tray into the scanner. The first negative seems to click into place properly and the scanner goes through a calibration to sense the picture. The calibration takes 30 to 60 seconds and happens each time you put a new tray of negatives into the scanner. Then you click scan and the photo is saved to the PC. The images seemed washed out and will probably take a bit of editing to restore to their original format. After the first scan I slid the tray to the next photo, but there was no definite stop point. I had to watch the computer screen to see when the image was centered in the scanner, then hit scan again. Taking into account the whole process, each set of negatives will take me at least 5 minutes. That adds up to a lot of time when I consider how many photo negatives I've collected.

Perhaps my expectations are too high for a photo negative scanner, but I would at least like a device which can scan a full set of negatives in a single touch and not cost $500 or more.

I'll be returning this gift and continue to look for something better.

5This was just what we needed!
By C. Lamb
After reading the other reviews I have to ask myself what the reviewers were expecting. As for me - I have slides from years ago that I wanted to get scanned. Also, my mother, who is 70 yr, had slides she wanted to scan. She is not computer literate so we needed something not too complicated. My brother purchased this PANSCN03 and we have loved it! It is easy to set up, quick and easy to use and, best of all, the pictures turn out great. If you care about the technical stuff psi and all that - can't help you. But if you are an average computer user who just wants to get your slides to photos - I highly recommend this. We have loved our trips down memory lane this scanner has made possible.
